Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in question included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public later this week.
