Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
